It should make no difference to you if she spells it Mom or Mum. As someone pointed out, the two words ARE pronounced differently. Either way it's a nickname. And MOM is NOT a misspelling, it's a completely different word. I have known American children to call their fathers Dad, Daddy, Pop and Papa. All are fine by me. Likewise, I wouldn't correct any of my Hispanic children who call their mothers Mami or their fathers Papi. That's what they call them and that's how it is spelled--no different than if they were called Bob and Mary.
