    I think that what a child calls his/her mother is a very personal thing and it is not for me to decide. Frankly, Mum and Mom are not pronounced the same way, so why should they be spelled that way. And what about "Mommy" or "Mother" or "Ma"--are we to regulate that too? Then, of course, are the umpteen ways that children adress their grandparents --gramma, grandma, granny, grandmother, meemaw, ummy, etc. etc. And all of the ways people spell their names--Linsey, Lindsey, Lindsay, Lyndsy, Lyndsee, etc. etc. I have always told my students that names don't follow the rules.
