I also teach second grade and just finished a unit on life cycles. My teammate and I started the unit with a KWL chart to assess what knowledge the students had. Then we had honogenious small groups research an animal's| life cycle with the librarian, (you could have them just research frogs). We also did several read alouds, fiction and nonfiction on frogs and other animals as well as incorporating these subjects into guided reading groups. Then, we bought two tadpoles (a kit can be ordered through Lakeshore or your local pet store)and set up an observation station in a center. Students wrote and drew | | observations in a response log. As another center we had a felt board set up with the parts of a frog's life cycle and words or phrases for labeling. Students manipulated the pieces and put them in order. Finally, we had a local wildlife agency come out and do a presentation on amphibians. Usually local agencies like this one have an education department and would be happy to come to your school for little or no cost. Good luck. Carla
