    My kids keep an Independent Reading Log, in which they write every day. Part of our center rotation includes 20 minutes of sillent reading, and then 20 minutes of Independent Reading Response. In this journal the kids have to tell about what they read that day and make connections to the text. I am using the Retell - Relate - Reflect format that I got from Michael Moore's class.     I am modeling for the students on chart paper what I expect after I finish reading a book or section, and have them posted in the room for the student to refer to. It gives them a format to follow when eriting in their journal, and goes beyond mere retelling. I collect the logs every Friday and the get 10 points for each complete entry (50 points for the week.) I do not scrutinize each entry, I just glance at them briefly to see that the kids are actually reading and at least attempting to make connections.
