    Clip to ScrapBook
I had the same thing happen with one of my students last year. His mother passed away right before the start of school. It was horrible. I went to his house to visit with him a week before school started. After getting permission from his father to bring some ice cream, we sat in his backyard and talked. I introduced myself, told him how sorry I was, talked about losing my brother when I was younger and feelings associated with that and ended our visit with things he could look forward to when he came to school. I also let him know that I would let him decide if he wanted his classmates to know about the passing and that I was always available to talk with, if he needed it. It was the best thing I could have done. He came to school feeling comfortable and confident. He knew that I knew and that he wasn't going to have to talk about it unless he wanted to. We had a great year.

Hope this helps. Have a great year!
