I prefer it to be closed too. Don't worry about what the others are doing unless someone says differently. You should feel comfortable when you are teaching-one less thing to think about during your first year. I don't like all the distractions either plus I'm somewhat soft spoken and I don't like to have to talk over passing classes. I also like it when parents might drop by they have to open the door which gets my attention and I know they are there.
