I am such a perfectionist (the reason why I don't hand write/print/cursive ANYTHING!). I have no great advice but I can't stand to write on my nametags either!!!!!!! I laminate my nametags first and then write on them with Sharpies. It writes smoother on the plastic. This way, if I mess up, you can use nail polish remover and get it right off and start again. :D
