in a K-6 school as well. Are you a new teacher?
I plan to spend much of my first day and first week on procedures and routines. That will set the tone for the rest of the year. The students must be made aware of what
is expected of them (and what they should expect of you) right away. I plan to have my rules posted and to go over them in depth. I plan to take a tour of the building (even though I don't think I have any new students) and practice walking in a line, being quiet, etc. I plan to do an interest inventory and also a multiple intelligences survey. This way I get to see what my kids like
and what their learning stlyes are. I plan to distribute supplies that I have for them and do a name drawing to form my groups. I will also assign them their number the first day and that number stays with them the rest of the year. I have an activity planned where they will make a poster about themselves, and they will also do a bio-poem. I will hang their poster and poem together in the hall. I will distribute books that day, and have them cover them. I will also distribute a short syllabus for each subject and go over that. Once they are in groups, I will have them do a scavenger hunt around the room to familiarize themselves with the room (ex. find out what is for lunch on Sept. 7 and write it down, what is in the third drawer of the writing center, what is the name of the 5th book in on the second shelf of the library, etc.) I will have them write a short journal entry of their thoughts on the first day of school. We'll end the day with thoughts of the first day, what we think the school year will be like, etc. I will also read at least one chapter of our novel, which I haven't decided on yet.

The rest of the week will be a review of routines, procedures, and rules. I will teach light lessons, such as where to find things in our textbooks, reviews, and do inventories in math, spelling, reading, etc. to find about where they stand. I plan to do interactive notebooks in social studies, so I will distribute the notebooks and let them decorate them. I will model the first week's lessons in the interactive notebook. It will take time, but after that, they should know how to do it! Our first week is the last week in August, so they have the holiday weekend after that, so I will not do anything too intensive.

Hope this helps a little! Let us know how it goes!
