Discipline

Clip to ScrapBook
Do you have a list of classroom / school rules
followed by positive and (if necessary) negative
consequences? My classroom rules (which are the
same as our school rules) are:
1-Follow directions the first time.
2-Keep
hands, feet and other objects to yourself.
3-Use clean and courteous language.
4-Walk in the school.

The consequences when children follow directions:
--verbal praise from the teacher
--Superkid tickets. (Child writes his name on a slip of paper and it goes into a weekly draw for
prizes.
--Monthly awards.
--Cubes are added to a jar and when the jar is

full, there is a class reward. (Party, free time, etc.)

If a child is not following the rules, here are
the consequences:
First time--I say to the child "You have a 1."
Second time--(Same day.) "You have a 2."
Third time--"You have a 3." A yellow sticky note
is put on child's desk and he has a time out.
fourth time--I put a check mark on the yellow sticky and the child misses something fun. (Recess, gym, art, etc.)
Fifth time--Child gets another check mark on his
sticky note and spends time with administrator.

I have daily communication books that go home.
At the end of the day, if the child did not get
a sticky note on his desk, he gets a stamp in his
book. If the child did get a sticky note, I write
a brief note to explain--"No stamp today. Johnny
ran in the hallway, hit Susan, etc., etc., etc.

Since school started this year, I've only put 1 or
2 sticky notes on desks! Consistency is difficult, but so important. It's not going to
be easy for you. You have a lot of "damage" to undue. You'll need to sit down with them, go over
your expectations and be prepared to carry out the
consequences--positive and negative. Good luck!

P.S.--I'd be interested in finding out what kind
of writing assignment is illegal!?!
