My reading area is seperate from my calendar area mostly because I use the shelves near the calendar area for our math manipulatives and calendar things. Since I also teach my mini lessons there I have all my writing and shared reading supplies on those shelves. I didn't want the kids distracted by the tubs of books and frankly, I found that it was too crowded looking when I had it all in the same corner. I tried to keep everything on the wall as opposed to jutting into the middle of the room for 2 reasons 1) because I like a nice wide open space and 2) because I had a student with CP and he couldn't maneuver very easily around physical obstacles in the classroom. My best advice for you is try it. If you don't like it, it's just furniture and you can always move it later if you don't like it. I think my first year I moved everything around about 7 or 8 times. The kids didn't mind. They adjusted wonderfully. So just try what you think is best for YOU and YOUR space. The worst that can happen is a month from now you realize you hate it and you spend 20-30 minutes changing it. Good luck with your first year! :s)
