    About halfway through the year I introduce a "mailbox" center. I Bring in an old plastic mailbox that I cleaned up and painted and put it in a corner somewhere. Then I introduce letter writing and show my students how to properly write letters. We talk about how mail is delivered etc. Then I start letting them practice letter writing on normal paper. Finally I let them write letters in their center every week. I made a template on the computer with the lines that have the dash in the middle and copied that on "fancy" paper or sometimes I'd just put different clipart on the blank places. Either way, each week they write letters to different people. They LOVE having "real grown up" paper. :D When they're done they put it in the mailbox. I've had them write to the secretaries, the nurse, the principals, their K teachers, their parents and finally I set up penpals with another first grade class and we write back and forth for most of the year. They always ask me when they're done with their work if they can write letters. Anyhow if you're worried about not having lines on the paper, make a sheet with lines and then copy it onto the fancy stuff. I'm sorry if this isn't very coherent... we had textbook training for a new series we got today and I've been in class since 9! :o
