You know how you order/buy resource books throughout the year, and set them in your "to read" pile, which never happens, because a million other things like teaching, childrearing, and paperwork take over? Anyway, I've been reading through my pile this summer and found a GREAT guided reading resource book-it doesn't give gr lesson ideas, but a MULTITUDE of MEANINGFUL upper grade literacy centers for independent work, and many of them could be used tomorrow, no prep. necessary. I ordered it from my Scholastic book order last year- it's called "Keep the Rest of the Class Reading and Writing...While You Teach Small Groups", targeted for gr. 3-6. The author is Susan Finney. I'm always leary of those 3-6 books, because I teach 3rd, and the darn book usually ends up being way over 3rd graders heads, but this one was extremely adaptable for all grades! I am very rarely impressed by a resource book, but this one is gonna come in very handy this year in helping me work SMARTER, not HARDER!
