Last year during my student teaching, I was in a 4th/5th split class. We began with 4th and then a week later got a couple handfuls of 5th, too.

The best thing I can say is try to split up the two curriculums as much as possible and do groups. It's really hard to have groups for everything, but it really is the best way. Also, since some of the 4th graders will be higher and some of the 5th graders will be lower, you can also combine some of them.

Differentiation and interest groups might also be another way to teach to the two groups.

I know it's not much, but I hope it helps. Good luck! ;)
