I have never done it personally, but I have seen teachers who used lamps instead of the overhead lighting. They had their students at rectangular tables and there was a lamp in the middle of each table. The change in lighting made such a huge change. Seemed way less institutional. She left her lamps on all day, except when she was not in the room.
