    Domino Addition

Hi, I am doing my student teaching in a first grade class and I recently did an addition lesson with my kids using dominos. I made domino cards out of black construction paper and put white dots on them with a white crayon. The lesson involved adding vertically (this is the first time the children added vertically, the other lessons were horizontally). I started by holding the domino horizontally and asked the children how many dots were on the first half and how many dots were on the second half. Then I wrote the addition sentence on the board (horizontally) then I turned the domino vertically and repeated the same thing. Then I went on to ask if the addition sentences were the same. The children really enjoyed it. I would have liked to have them each make a domino at the end of the lesson but I ran out of time.
