Our school has qualified for a grant in guided reading. It is wonderful. My once out-of-control 1st graders are learning to self-manage themselves while I have small guided reading groups. I now have eight centers in which "I decided" where the children go. They read our "work board" and know where to go and what to do. We practiced each center and they learned how to use the materials and what to do without interrupting the kids I am working with. I suggest that you look for several Scholastic published books by Fountas and Pinnel which describe Guided reading. You will be very happy with the results and your kids will get the instruction at their level of reading that they need. I think it's awesome! Oh, yeah... this is my first year as a teacher of a self-contained group. I used to teach music and band. If I can figure this out, so can you! Good luck!
