I am also a first grade teacher and am doing an integrated unit on communities. What we do is focus first on our small classroom community, work up to school community, then town community, then state, country, world. We are now focusing on community contributors and who iis needed in each community. It is great to help the kids to see that everyone together makes a community run, and that it is necessary to be a good community contributor, each and every one of them.
