I agree with all above. I always let me kids stand, work on knees, and I also have an area of the floor they can be prone and up on their elbows working.

As far as the timer, kids don't "see: the time going. We use a visual clock. The cheapest I have found one is $30 at ReallyGoodStuff.com

There's a good picture of it- the red part gets smaller as time is ending. If the building was burning down, I'd grab that clock (ok, and the students, too!)!:o
