If you have some planning days prior to the beginning of school you may get the names of some students who have already been a part of the resource room in the past. Otherwise teachers will probably make recommendations once they get to observe their students in that first week. As far as getting ready here are a few tips.... 1) plan your room decor - what type of bulletin board display, are you going to use incentive charts, do you need an alphabet chart, etc., Before you buy find out what the school already has. Most resource rooms tend to be well-stocked with resources. 2) think about different behaviour plans - how will you motivate your students, how do you want them to enter your room - are they to be sent down to your class or will you go and pick them up. 3) Ask questions, if you are not sure of the schedule for the fall - write out a few questions and leave them with your Principal to get back to you. You could ask him or her if they know already some of the students you will be working with - are there any files you could come in and read on those students - when will you officially be starting special ed classes, etc., 4) If you plan on using prizes for some things you may want to begin shopping a dollar stores and yard sales to find some inexpensive items especially things like erasers, pencils, note books, etc., that students can earn when they accomplish certain goals. Finally just relax - things will come together and by the end of September you'll be wondering what you were worrying about back in July :) Congratulations on your teaching position !!
