word center
By Sandy

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi,

You can also put word cards in the center so that kids can make compound words. You'll need to put a picture cue on each card so that 1st graders can read. I make mine and used clip art books to illustrate the cards.
i.e. foot/ball - one card with a picture of a foot and another with a picture of a ball. For the sake of accountability, you may then have students write all of the words that they made.

Word family cards. Put a rime on a card, i.e.
-an. Then have children add beginning letters to make a word family. can, man, fan. Accountablility? Have them write the families that they

make. Higher levels - write each word in a sentence.

Making names - write a letter of each class members name on an index card and put each name in plastic baggy. Children can put names together one letter at a time. For self checking, write the name of the student on the outside of their name baggy.

Put theme words in center for them to alphabetize.

Put opposites word cards, homonym word cards for matching activities.

The possibilities are endless. Hope this helps. Another great resource is the Words Their Way book by Bear, Johnson. The second edition is much more practical than the first. Neat ideas. Word Matters by Fountas and Pinnell is great, too.
