When testing in any area, but especially the content area, first make sure you have set out for yourself EXACTLY what you want the children learn/know from this area of the curriculum. Once you know WHAT you are expecting from the students, it makes it easier for you to help them adquire this understanding. You can then figure out a way in which the children can demonstrate their understanding to you. This may mean modifying your "test" for non readers by having them tell you orally and you "scribing" it for them; it might also mean allowing kids to draw, or cut out and glue answers from a word bank. This may mean your "test"will not necessarily "look" like a traditional paper and pencil test, but are your kids ready for one, and/or do they really need one to demonstrate knowledge of the material??
