I actually decided to do something along those liness--I focused not on the tragedy but on the idea of patriotism and the American flag. My kids absolutely loved it and I will continue to discuss being an American. I do not have a very ethnically diverse class this year, so the world map idea probably wouldn't be as powerful for me as in many other classroom across the country. But thank you for your idea and I'm sure many others can use it in their classroom.
