NY Tragedy
By Marilyn

Clip to ScrapBook
Although we are in Canada, there was a need to address the horror of what happened to our friend and neighbour, the United States. We knew that the students would be hearing many scary things on the ride home on the bus.
I explained to my class that a terrible thing had happened to our friends in the United States. People with such hate in their hearts had blown up buildings causing a great many of the people to be hurt or killed. I told them that although they might hear others talking about what happened on the way home, to ask their parents to explain any questions they might have. The next day we, as
a school went outside and stood in a semi-circle around our flagpole on a brilliant, crisp morning. Our principal explained simply why we were there and that the flag would be put at half mast to show that we cared and respected our friends in the United States. In clear voices we sang O Canada and we raised the flag and lowered it to half mast. I have no doubt that our students will remember that time forever. Simple, sincere and with sensitivity. God Bless America! God Save Us All!
