A friend of mine...

called it Breakfast with Books. It was very informal. Her school population has a high percentage of low income families that don't spend lots of time reading together. The guests were invited to come and enjoy books and
a light meal (bagels, donuts, cereal).

Another friend had a mom and son's book club (at a much more affluent school). They read and discussed the text just as you would in an adult book club. They met at lunch and ate during the meetings. They met once a week.

You could do a different focus book club each month... girl book, boy book, adventure book, biography, etc. I
am considering the breakfast idea because I teach in a urban setting with all low income students as well. It's a challenge getting the parents to step foot inside the school... the less pressure the better. And if they have a positive experience they will be more inclined to come again.
