Grades By Amanda K

In our district, we have just adopted a standards-based report card. If kids are not at the minimum standard, they do not get a passing mark for that standard, period. Effort is not included. That's a district wide policy| that is fast becoming prevalent all over my state (California). I will say, however, that last year I did include effort in one child's grade, and I regret doing so. He was not behind in grade level, but I did give him the equivalent of a B instead of a C because he tried so hard. His parents are now wondering why he is not doing as well in second grade, and I feel guilty about that. | | I will never include effort again. First grade is such a formative year as far as academic subjects go, and parents need to know the truth. (Although I know that it is very difficult not to let effort be a factor... these kids are so sweet!)As for your bright child who shows little effort, I've been there and can sympathize! Call his parents and tell them that this is an issue that could affect his grade. Enlist their support. It's possible that he is this way at home, too, and maybe they have some suggestions of how to deal with best with their child. And, by all means, if he doesn't deserve the grade because he hasn't been doing the work, don't give it to him. I know this sounds harsh, but think of it this way: If he doesn't do the work, then he at some point will get to a level where the work won't be easy anymore and he will have to work, but he won't know how. If you overlook the behavior, he will think it's okay. There will be other teachers down the line who won't be so forgiving, and his grades will drop. I always try to think about preparing my kids for those teachers and their methods. I want them to be able to do well in anyone's class.
