Our school system has a homework policy. Homework cannot count for much in the grand scheme of things, because we as teachers cannot control the home environment. My sixth graders have always been really bad at doing homework. We have a Saturday school program where kids can attend on Saturday to make up missed assignments. It's a pain to collect up missed assignments and kids might or might not show up.

My middle schoolers act as if they have no experience with homework, but my elementary son and daughter both have homework every evening.

I will often give full credit for made-up assignments, but usually the make-up work is of such poor quality that the resulting grade is pretty low anyway.

One missed assignment wouldn't make or break a student in my class--it's a pattern of not doing work and then doing poorly on classwork, tests, and quizzes that causes my students to fail.
