first day
By Angie

Clip to ScrapBook
I have a paper that my kids complete on the first day of school. I'll try to explain it for you. At the top of the paper is written the sentence: This is my first day in first grade. The middle section is left open for
students to draw a picture of themselves. At the bottom of the paper are two lines of what looks like handwriting paper. The kids are to copy the first day in first grade sentence here.

I save this paper for Open House. We write a simliar paper at Open House time except the sentence on the second paper says "And now it's Open House!" At Open House, I mount the two pages side by side

on a piece of constuction paper.

My kids always love looking at stuff from the beginning of the year. Some don't remember ever writing so "sloppy".

I also read the story "Miss Nelson is Missing" to begin our discussion of class rules. This story becomes a favorite to be reread throughout the year.

I purchase cutouts of multi-cultural colored people shapes. I let the kids choose what color they think looks most like them. Then they decorate their person to look like them. We graph how many boys and girls are in our class using their cutouts taped to butcher paper.
