When you use any manipulatives, they need to just play with them first. Let them get it out of their system before involving them in a more structured activity. Proper handling means: Not throwing, respecting other student's work, no building guns with the multilink cubes, etc. Thanks for the dialog. While taking a shower I decided to add a basket of counting books with some blank paper and markers. "Make your own counting book" for those who speed through. Most counting books are suitable for emergent readers because they usually are limited to the number word plus a noun identified by the picture clue.Low maintainance and preparation center!
