If they are going to sniff them, they've lost their priviledge in my eyes. They don't HAVE to use dry erase. I don't know about the effects, but it's inappropriate behavior at least. Just use paper and pencil to practice. They keep the same piece of paper to practice with all week. It may be dull, but it's safe! I use the WB just for practice, not for a graded assignment anyway.
