I think you're right By maryteach

to have "mixed feelings" about teaching spelling. Spelling (and handwriting) instruction takes up WAY too much time in way too many classrooms. I don't think reading or writing instruction should ever be put on hold while we practice two pseudo-academic areas.
But some spelling instruction is in order. Consider giving each kid what he needs, in the form of a quick minilesson, during writer's conferences. Not all kids, obviously, need to work on the same spelling generalizations.
That can be supplemented, if you like, with Words Their Way, which is a spelling/word study program. It's | | based on the belief that kids' needs in this area are totally developmental. After determining, with a quick test, where kids are on a continuum (which you're given), you then give them word sorts. The kids physically sort the words, copy the sort into their word study notebook, then write the generalization (NEVER rule) that they've discovered. Quickly grade these notebooks with a glance and never give another spelling test again. Centers would be a very good place to do weekly (or twice-weekly) word sorts.
Isn't it amazing how a practice that everyone knows is the exact opposite of best practice keeps on living and going and being the way it's done? But you are willing to reflect upon what you do, and that's great.
