Spelling Approach
By lynn

Clip to ScrapBook
In regards to a post further down, I was wondering does anyone out there use the idea that Michael Moore shares about using a poem for spelling and language arts instruction?

I have such mixed feelings on teaching
spelling. Giving a weekly list seems to make parents happy and it is what kids are used to, but in all honesty I have not found it to be the most effective way. I have tried using two or three different lists based on needs and even individualized spelling lists, but it can become very time consuming and often still results in children memorizing for a test and then forgetting.

We
have a set amount of poems we must cover in our language arts curriculum (Core Knowledge) and I would like to incorporare a poem a week into my instruction. He seems to cover a variety of skills in addition to spelling. I am curious as to how you select the words/poems and how receptive parents and others are to doing this.

I will be welcoming a new teacher to my grade level this year and I don't want to overwhelm her, however if I can plan for this efficiently I think she will like the idea. The problem is making sure I am secure in this method. Any feedback is welcome, even if you tried it and hated it. Thanks.
