Word Wall book and ideas
By Karine

Clip to ScrapBook
Scholastic has a fabulous book "Teaching with Word Walls". It goes into detail about setting up a word wall: alphabet and chunking(word families). It is certainly worth a look at; and it's reasonably priced. As for introducing
the idea to the kids, you could also start with an alphabet book in which there is a picture/word that represents each letter of the alphabet. This would demonstrate the concept of the alphabet word wall to the kids. As for the word families wall, use nursery rhymes and have kids find the rhyming words. See the web site: #####.com and check out the nursery rhymes theme: there's
a website put together by some people at the University of Michigan that has a vast collection of nursery rhymes. Transcribe them on chart paper and have kids come up and cirle rhyming words and also pick a letter of the day and have them come and underline words that start with that letter. Good luck.

Karine.
