I use dimes By tweet

I give plastic dimes for making As on assignments, being good all week, etc. When they have 10 they trade for a dollar. Every so often, once a week if I can squeeze it in, we shop. My "store" has little junk from Wal-Mart and the Dollar Tree. My 3rd graders would do just about anything last year to earn a dollar to buy a stretchy snake from Wal-Mart (88 cents for a package of 6 or 8!) or a Groucho Marx nose/glasses thing.

this year I am thinking of changing up and giving smaller denomination coins so there can be more trading. Like giving nickels and have them trade for dimes, quarters and dollars. I may reprice my store so items have different prices. Right now everything is a dollar.
