Daily Payment By Steph

Hi! My kids earn $0.04 per day to stay on my good behavior. If they go above and beyond they earn a nickel. One step under good and they have to pay me...two steps no money. I also pay for acts of kindness, extremely good work, compliments, and complete homework for a week. Every two weeks I open my classroom store which consists of items in range from $0.50-$2.00. Hopefully this teaches them to save and plan ahead. I use parent donations and free stuff to stock my store.
Rules of the store include that money has to be in the smallest coin amount possible. They have to trade in money when | | they can. Also, it stays in the classroom and is a priviledge. I had one who played with it constantly and lost two of the film canisters I provide to keep the coins in. She lost the priviledge to participate. By the 2nd semester, my 2nd graders will be running the store and acting as banker. I may try to do it earlier if I have a parent who can come in at the end of the day everyday. The kids practice counting their money all the time. I expect them to know how much they have and if they buy something they need to know how much change they should get back...we do a lot of talking about this more than them actually figuring it out at the beginning of the year. It takes a lot of time and I have tried to do it by paying them weekly, but with my 8 year olds, the daily handing out of money is necessary for the motivation.
I know teachers who use their "bucks" to buy coupons for eating lunch with the teacher, sitting next to a friend, free homework passes, etc.
Hope that helps.
Steph
