I teach sixth

and they still have to rehearse the line in sixth! We also do it many times those first couple of weeks.

Since I'm a lang. arts teacher, I am frequently walking a line to the library, and I also want a silent line
(my content partner lets her kids act like monsters, talking and laughing, not even in a line. It drives me nuts). I have a carrot I dangle for them: for every seven compliments they get from ANY adult in the building (except me) for their behavior, they get a free period. They are not allowed to fish for compliments (how are we acting, Mr. B?) and I must hear the compliment with
my own ears. Hearsay compliments don't count. This compliment carrot also helps to keep them good for subs--not always easy in middle school, bless their pointed little heads. Anyway, five is too easy to earn, and ten is too hard, so I settled on seven. It seems to work.
