You should send out invitations in time for people to make plans. 5-6 weeks is what I've always seen - some send it earlier than that. Please don't ask for monetary gifts - the invitation is strictly to invite them to your wedding. If they want to give you something (and they probably will) that's up to them, but you shouldn't ask for it.
