Morning time- long sorry
By mandyg

Clip to ScrapBook
Students can enter the building at 8:20am. Announcements start at about 8:50am. Students trickle in at all different times; some stop at the cafeteria and get breakfast and bring it to the classroom.

My crew last
year was, well, special. There were (initially) LOTS of behaviors and control problems. I have a few more gray hairs now! However, I was SO proud of them by the end of the year. They grew up ALOT.

In order to keep myself sane this year and the students calm (a different student or two CRIED EVERYDAY for the first THREE weeks of school- and it wasn't always the same child!) morning
time was VERY structured.

On the board every morning:
Good Morning!
1. Unpack. Turn in homework/ Friday folder or whatever was due.
2. Sharpen your pencils.
3. Write down and pack up your homework.
4. Make sure you have a DEAR time book.
5. Begin your morning work.

Students completed this in THIS order. Morning work was DOL (similar to DLR, math problems, analogies, or some kind of review work)

After students finished, I considered it THEIR time. They could read, play games (I had a box a "games"- dominoes, plurals go fish, blocks, etc) BUT THEY COULDN"T DISTURB THEIR NEIGHBORS. If they did, it became MY time (sit and do ____ activity- no fun).

After announcements we would check morning work as a class. Occasionally I would spot check by picking assignments up and looking for effort/ quality. Assignments that did not show effort/ quality were redone during recess.

The year before I had a great group. They got along really well and I had few behavior problems. They followed the same routine in the morning, except they did not have morning work. It was free center time. I put out a bunch of games I had made. It was first come, first serve. Students couldn't argue over who got to play what. Period. And they really never did, believe it or not. They loved it!

I have some of the games I put out on my website:

Sorry this is so long... I didn’t mean to ramble so much!
