It's rare for the student teacher to be there as you work with your class to establish behavior guidellines and class expectations, so this will no doubt be a very interesting few months for her/him. I've had 4 student teachers
and only 1 was in the room from September.

The journal is a great help, as they can jot down their questions while you're teaching and you can answer at your leisure. In the same journal, you can add background, advice and information from your experience that the student might not have thought of asking about...like why you do things in this order and not like that.

thing I did with my student is to invite her into the room while I was putting it together in the summer, so she could be in on the initial setting up, the first bulletin boards, the labelling of supplies, the placement meetings, the class lists, etc. All of that is a mystery to them till they get their own room so they may as well experience a little of it now. It will give them a more complete picture. I don't mean she came every day as I was setting up, but she did spend one day there, and I think she got a good idea of what it's like before children arrive. And she spent part of a Sept staff workday with us when the room was ready for kids, and could see the progress. She had a LOT of questions about the early decision making that has become second nature to most of us.
