Clip to ScrapBook
My Star of the Week is great--have used it in First and Third grade equally well. I start with my poster of pictures/captions on the "Star of the Week" board for a couple-three weeks to give them an idea. If Jonny is next
week's star, he brings in a posterboard with his family pictures and captions and it is posted for the week. He presents it for 15 minutes on Friday, and he is my helper for that whole week. They look forward to their time to talk about their family.

Indoor recess-I have them get into partners only, and they have to do the same game for the whole time. This cuts down on
a myriad of problems.

I do the pencil sharpener only in the morning, too. I've let them do file folder games if all morning duties are completed.

I collect all the glue and scissors at the beginning of the year and hand them out as needed for activities. There's no scissors being spun around on pencils (ooohh!) or renegade glue all over desks, chairs, etc.
I've done "Caught Being Good" or "Smile" notes. Students who are caught get to put their name on a Happy Face tag for a chance at the grab bag on Friday. I pick a boy and a girl, sometimes two each. The grab bag has pencils, erasers, pencil grips, trinkets, candy, "coupons" like free homework assignments, etc. It's pretty motivational.
