vocab strategies

Clip to ScrapBook
I do like some of the others and teach it using context clues because that is how it is tested on our state test. I do use index cards sometimes. One way I do it is that I give each group a word from the story. I give
them the page number in the story that it can be found on. The group must find the word on that page. They have to write down the sentence before the word, the sentence with the word in it, and the sentence after the word. They then go to the dictionary and find it. They have to choose the correct meaning based on the story. They then write the definition. They draw a picture or prepare
a skit to show the class and share their word. The reason I only have them do one is that it would take forever to do them all. I incorporated this skill because it is tested on our state test. They are given a dictionary entry for a word in the stopry that they read and they must choose the correct word. Another thing that I use is that our state adopted basal has short paragraphs with the words in them. I have created my own transparencies that have the dictionary entries for us to choose the correct word.
