btsn

Clip to ScrapBook
You can give the parents a piece of paper and have them draw a picture of themselves. The kids think watching their parents draw is hilarious. After BTSN you can post the portraits and ask students to match the parent picture
to the child in your room.

Another activity for parents and students is a scavenger hunt. Give each family a list of things to look for in your room, or in the whole school if you're brave. Each group must find "the class rules", "your child's desk", "A red geranium", etc. and check it off. This lets them wander the room with a purpose and get to know it. When a paper is completed

they can turn it in to you for a small prize (a sucker, sticker, welcome back book mark, etc.) This way you get to say a word or two to each set of parents as they finish up.

My most successful BTSN activity was when we held our meeting about two weeks into the school year. I had my brother come out and take slides of the students as they worked. (He was very good at capturing unforgetable moments.) I showed the slides during our BTSN meeting in our room, using them to explain different parts of our day. The parents were thrilled to see their children in class and loved it when I gave them the slides later in the year.
