literacy nights

Clip to ScrapBook
One thing we tried - didn't work - don't do it - is to have the kids (gr 1 - 3) stay overnight. The Grade one's don't sleep, and tho the event and idea are lots of fun, and we had parent help at night and breakfast, the
overnight hours become teacher responsibilities and it's not easy to deal with even just 4 frightened children in the middle of the night around 100 sleeping ones. So just make it an evening, even a late evening, without overnight.

Successful ideas; professional storyteller - especially one that involves the kids in their activity, involving parents in every event - all round
the school we had activities based on a great kids book - so they'd read the book and then do something short to follow it up, like make a craft or puppet, try out the illustrator's technique, sequence the story with flannel board, all events were set up/run by parents. Teachers/assistants took small groups around to the events set up in different school spaces. Co-ordinate with a book fair or parent speaker. Let kids wear pj's. Serve hot chocolate and cookies as one of the events midway. Get parents to sign children in and out officiallly, and leave a number where they can be reached, or invite them to stay. Pick up by 9pm. Go out for spanish coffee.
