outrageous! By Jenny IA

That is outrageous! I too have taught in an inner city school and I've worked with low socioeconomic city kids for 13 years, so I have sure seen similar behaviors, but I agree that this cannot be the end of it. As a teacher| I'd document this as was suggested and inform the principal, the superintendent, and the school board. If these kids aren't being held accountable that is unacceptable and the higher ups need to know what is going on. Seriously, even state legislators would be horrified to hear what went on for you...As a parent I'd insist that something be done. That child who punched another should | | be suspended for sure; physical fighting is an automatic suspension where I teach, which included hands on anyone, even to push someone into a trash can! On another note, as a sub and as a teacher I totally agree that bribery is the way to go when you are talking about short term situations when you just need to survive and get them to make it through class with some amount of cooperation. On a long term basis I don't believe in it, but in your case, when you sub (anywhere really, as a plan B) in a needier building or have a challenging class and you know you'll HAVE a sub, a big bag of Skittles or a case of pop can go a long way! Good luck and keep those expectations high!!
