sweet rewards
By sunshine1

Clip to ScrapBook
I taught fifth for 4 years. My favorite end of the year idea was called "Sweet Rewards". It takes time, but not much money. Parents loved it and some saved the reward. I bought tons of candy bars...only ones I could make
sense of. I created a different award for each student and attached a little typed note to each candy bar with ribbon. On the last day I had a ceremony for handing them out. It went something like this...
I would take a snickers and give it to the student who had a great laugh or found things funny a lot. I would give an impromtu speech that set up the award.
"The next
award goes to the student who was always finding the good in things. She would laugh and giggle at almost everything and make the class feel good. This year's snicker award goes to..." Once the award was handed out, I would watch students head back to their seat to read the note. I would write a personal thought to each about how valuable they have been to me and how much potential I see in them. Each a little different. Parents would call later and thank me for the note. One told me she put the whole thing in a scrapbook...candy bar and all. Her son wanted to eat it but she wanted it all to stay in tact for future memories! Other great candy bars to use include:
Zero: math award
Whatchamacallit: goofiest student
3 muskateer: given to three at once joined at the hip
Nutrageous: nuttiest/class clown
Spree: shopper of the class
100 Grand: worth a million dollars/ most outgoing
payday: could have done my job for me or most helpful
