Great transitions book and an idea
By Karine

Clip to ScrapBook
I recently purchased a book called "Transition Tips and Tricks" by Jean Feldman (ISBN 0-87659-216-7). It constitutes a wonderful resource for transition activities and also attention grabbers to get kids motivated.
As for the transition from Calendar Time to reading, why not play Wheel of Fortune with the class? This is a fun way of getting them ready for reading and you could also incorporate any word families you have been studying. If you want to make it more interactive, provide each student with a set of letters mounted on cardboard with which they could use to solve the puzzle/mystery word.
From there you could then use the letters and have the kids develop their word-building skills. The book "Word Matters" by Fountas and Pinnell is supposed to be an excellent resource for such activities.
Good luck.

Karine.
