I do group my students according to ability. Of course they are flesible groups and the groups are continuously changing. I also do whole class instruction. Here is a rough draft of my schedule
7:50 Students arrive/restroom and check in
8:00 announcements and journals
8:15 Morning work/poetry, read it, draw it, solve it
8:45 Guided Reading (groups)
9:30 Phonics (whole class)
10:00 Language arts (groups) and writing
11:00 - 12:00 Lunch and recess
12:00 Calendar
12:20 Math (groups)
1:00 Science/Social studies
1:20 Recess
1:40 Specials
2:40 ready for home
