Skipping Class - K-8
By Sharon D. W-L

Clip to ScrapBook
We have been asked to think of ideas for students who have been skipping classes. The idea is to be positive, if at all possible. I teach grade 1 in a K-8 school. I use a Golden Ticket program and at the beginning of the
year for about 3-6 weeks I give out tickets to those who come in on time. I draw two prizes a day which are usually snacks. At the end of the month I draw one big prize and then empty of the ticket bag and we start all over again. After the 3 weeks I start cutting back b/c I feel that it is their "job" to come to school and for the most part be on time. If it is a bigger issue I contact
home and if that is not working then I call on my Guidence Counsellor to make contact.

Overall I'd rather they come late then not at all. Once they learn the routine and can come in with out disrupting the class then it is not a big deal if they are late once in a while. The ones coming late constantly are annoying at times. However, it is not really their fault as they are 6! What else can I do?

What do other classes/schools do for those who skip classes and for the late, late students?

sdwl;)
