when the doctor says you can't work, you can't work and the district has to give you the time off. However, whether or not you get paid for that time off depends on if you have sick days or not. In our state, all employers are required to maintain disability insurance on their employees EXCEPT the state itself - doncha know - so if we teachers want disability insurance, we have to buy it ourselves. Luckily most teachers bank enough sick days to take most of the six weeks off with pay and if we lack some we can usually take it from the sick bank and pay it back once we get back to work.
