grouping

Clip to ScrapBook
we do flexible grouping for math: pretest (or use disaggregated data from state test) for each unit (algebra, geometry, measurement, fractions...) and group them high, middle, low (we don't tell them that!)

we really
like it because the kids aren't always high or low, depending on their abilities in one area, they change around quite a bit--yes, we have a couple who are always in the high group (1 comes to mind), and we have a couple who are always in the low group...but off the top of my head, right now in the high group for algebra we have a girl who is usually in the low group! it's great because
we have similar skill sets to work with and can speed up or slow down as needed.

we do the same for "novels" class--we look at their CBM (WPM), STAR level, lexile, and state test score and then group them hi, mid, low. for our last novels switch, we did an interest-based grouping and found out the genre of novel they'd like to read--this involves more differentiation/different novels; lit circles, etc.

(we have 3 6th grades)
