Well...you could duck in, speak to the guest of honor. Drink a cup of punch. When everyone gets to socializing, step out discreetly as if you are going to the ladies' room and ....disappear! Maybe you can be sure to speak| to the top bully too. Or you can work in your room until the party is in full swing or practically over and step in to admire the recipient's loot. Don't say too much about why you aren't there--it's none of anyone's business. Be completely dignified and assume the demeanor of someone with important things on her mind and important things to do. If you don't go for the bait, people | | usually back down when they are getting in your business, and giving someone the 3rd degree for skipping a party is prying. Give a short answer and no further explanation even if they persist. Just look at them and give them a professional teacher's smile but no further information.
Keep in mind that if you work at this school for a while, it will be your turn to be the guest of honor provided you aren't already married and haven't already had all your kids. What goes around comes around for sure. I know I doled out for endless weddings and babies through my 20s and 30s wishing I could get showered even if I didn't get a husband first! I wanted nice dishes and soft towels too!
At our school it isn't unusual for groups to throw in together to keep the cost to the individual low.
Gift-giving needn't be extravagent: even a package of diapers is nice to receive. I got a lot of diaper packs and wipes and such consumable items that defintely didn't catch dust!
